DID ARCTIC CAT MAKE A LYNX IN 1970? IF SO, HOW WOULD I TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "70" & "71" WITHOUT AN I.D. PLATE ? ? THIS ONE HAS NO I.D. PLATE THAT I CAN FIND ANTWHERE.
IT ALSO NEEDS A NEW TRACK. WHAT SIZE (LENGTH) WOULD I NEED TO LOOK FOR ?

The only production figures I've seen show about 50,000 Panthers and 2,000 Pumas built for the 1970 model year. That's it. Lynx's first show up in '71.

Keep in mind that the 1971 Lynx was built in 1970.  When you look at the tags on the machines the build year will technically be the year prior to the model year.  And from my experience and literature the Lynx was introduced for the 1971 model year meaning it was actually built in 1970.  The Puma was introduced in 1970 and built in 1969.  Although a few Puma Mod's were built for the 1969 racing season.

To answer your track question: The '71-'73 Lynx and the '70-'72 Puma shared the same track.  The 1973 Puma's used a staggered cleat unit which was the last year of the Puma for a while.  Then the Lynx went into a Series I, Series II designation for 1974/75.

Hi,
The first Lynx was a 1971 model.  It is easily identified by the two piece seat (a wedge shaped bottom cushion with a separate back rest).  The '72 and up used a one piece seat.
The 1971 and '72 Lynx used the same track as the 1970-72 Puma, and the '71 EXT (standard model).  This track was a cleat drive, with 36 cleats, and is 17" wide x 103.5" long.  The 1973 Lynx used the 2/3 staggered cleat track, which was an internal (involute) drive, but was also 17" wide x 103.5" long.
The 1974 Lynx came in two versions; Series I and Series II.  The Series I used the "short" Puma/EXT/Lynx chassis.  The Series II used the "mid-size" Cheetah chassis, with a longer track (17" wide x 117.9" long).  The '74s also used the internal drive set-up.
For reference, the Panthers from that era had a track that was 17" wide x 126.5" long, and the 1971 EXT Special/1972-73 EXT/1973-74 El tigre had a track that was 15" wide x 117.9" long.

 Later ....... Paul W.
