Has anyone made an aftermarket or newer outboard coil work on their rotary sled?  I've changed 2 coils out in the last two years, and I'm affraid they are like the spark plug; cant find a new one for the old sled.  I thought maybe you guys have "engineered" a new type coil to work on these old machines.  Post up what you used and what you did, it would be a tremendous help.

Thank you,

Jason.

has far as i know all the OMC coils are the same, and ive use others,  coils are coils to the most part.

Rampage, do you have any part numbers of the coils you've used with success?  Did you mount the coil in a different locataion because of a shorter plug wire?  Interested in what coil would have the same type of straight plug and not a 90 degree angle on the end.  Also, did you lengthen the wire to the capacitor and power pack without any problems?  Give some direction on what you did please.

Rampage, I see in the pic you have what appears to be a stock coil, but trying to find a stock one for my 73 is next to impossible.  If you know of a place that sells replacements, please let me know.  Mine mounts under the seat close to the power pack and has a long plug wire that goes to the top of the motor under the cowl, little different than yours.  I figured somebody on here must of modified a newer coil and made it work because of the lack of factory parts.

Thank you Rampage, I appreciate it.  Is there a way to test these coils with a meter prior to putting them on to make sure they are good?  What would a good output reading be on a coil?

Thank you,

Jason

I like to find a kid in the ally by the garage, have him hold the sparkplug and the handlebars, if he screams i got spark.

When I was having problems with my sled starting, I checked for fire on the plug with the coil mounted in the machine.  Saw fire, but the sled still wouldn't start.  Replaced the coil eventhough there was a spark, and the machine fired right up.  I guess eventhough it had spark, it was weak.  Just thought the voltage could be checked, and under a certain amount the coil wouldn't work, over it would fire.
